Echo Rock Hot Springs

Oregon Hot Springs Statewide Map

Echo Rock Hot Springs (also known as Owyhee Hot Spring) offers a rugged, primitive soaking experience in concrete pools along the Owyhee River in Eastern Oregon. Best visited from late fall to early spring, this remote gem provides a true backcountry escape.

Trailhead Directions

From US-95, turn onto McBride Road (check for closures due to rutting; Succor Creek Road is an alternate). The road into Leslie Gulch can be challenging, often requiring a high-clearance vehicle, especially with snow.

Once in Leslie Gulch, hike 3.5 miles up the Owyhee River to the springs. During high spring runoff, the road may be submerged, necessitating a 4-mile paddle upstream to access.

Do your research before taking on this one. Despite how difficult it is to reach Echo Rock Hot Springs, the reward exceeds the effort.

Considerations

Echo Rock Hot Springs is generally considered clothing-optional, consistent with the ethos of many remote natural hot springs in Oregon. Given its remote location and rugged access, it may not be suitable for very young children, and its primitive nature means families should be prepared for a rustic experience.

LNT

Practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out all trash and human waste, avoid glass containers and do not use soap or shampoo in the pools. Bring sturdy waterproof sandals, plenty of water and quick-drying towels. Be aware of fluctuating water temperatures and potential cow dung in upper pools (easily emptied and refilled).

Camping

Dispersed (primitive) camping is generally available in the surrounding public lands of the Owyhee Canyonlands, which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
