Neon Cowboy Roadhouse + Hot Springs

Located just north of Lakeview, the Neon Cowboy Roadhouse + Hot Springs represents a major revitalisation of the historic site formerly known as Hunters Hot Springs. While the name has changed, the core attraction remains: a deep connection to the geothermal activity of the High Desert and the home of Oregon’s only continuous geyser.

The Soak and the Hot Springs Source

The centerpiece of the property is the large outdoor mineral pool. Fed by natural artesian wells, the water enters at high temperatures and is cooled to a comfortable soaking range (typically between 98°F and 104°F depending on the season and pool management).

  • Pure mineral water with no added chemicals.
  • A blend of classic Oregon roadside nostalgia and modern “roadhouse” energy. It is an ideal spot for stargazing, given Lake County’s status as a certified Dark Sky region.
  • Soaking is generally included for hotel guests, with day passes often available for travelers passing through.

Old Perpetual Geyser

You cannot visit this site without acknowledging Old Perpetual. Located on the edge of the property, this geyser is the only one of its kind in the state, traditionally erupting every 90 seconds to 2 minutes, sending a plume of 200°F water up to 60 feet in the air.

Note: Geyser activity can be intermittent based on local water tables and geothermal conditions. Even when “resting,” the surrounding steam vents and mineral deposits are a sight to behold.

The Roadhouse Experience

The transition from Hunters to the Neon Cowboy Roadhouse brought a significant upgrade to the amenities. The property now functions as a full-service basecamp for exploring Southeast Oregon.

  • Lodging: Renovated motel-style rooms that are clean, cozy and updated with modern comforts like Wi-Fi and kitchenettes.
  • Dining: An on-site restaurant and bar serving hearty “cowboy” fare, providing a much-needed refueling station for those coming off the Bullard Canyon Trail or returning from the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge.
  • Atmosphere: Friendly, family-run and decidedly unpretentious.

Getting There

The Neon Cowboy Roadhouse + Hot Springs is situated directly off US-395, approximately 2.5 miles north of downtown Lakeview. It serves as the perfect jumping-off point for those heading toward the Warner Wetlands or the high desert outback.

Rules of the Soak

  • Respect the Geyser: Old Perpetual is a natural wonder; stay behind designated barriers for safety.
  • No Glass: Keep the pool area safe for everyone.
  • Pack it Out: Help maintain the High Desert beauty by leaving no trace.
  • Check Road Conditions: If visiting in winter, always check road reports before crossing the high passes into Lake County.

Nearby Hot Springs: The High Desert Loop

If you are using Lakeview as your basecamp, several other notable geothermal sites are within striking distance:

  • Summer Lake Hot Springs (54 miles North): A historic 145-acre resort featuring an iconic indoor timber-frame pool and outdoor rock tubs. It is roughly a 1-hour drive north on Highway 31.
  • Hart Mountain Hot Springs (67 miles Northeast): For a more primitive experience, head into the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. These natural rock-walled pools offer incredible views of Warner Peak but require a high-clearance vehicle for the final stretch.

  1. Hunters Hot Springs may soon no longer be available for soaking, as it is currently under threat from the Town of Lakeview and PacificCorp by geothermal power generation development.

You comments to the Environmental Assessment need to be received by February 18, 2011.

We need your help to keep this geothermal basin alive.

  2. New ownership, this place is great. The pool is clean and warm, the scenery is excellent. The family just bought it, so they are in the process of opening and cleaning up a bunch of stuff. There is also an AMAZING geyser here. This place is a great stop as you’re going through.
